Electric Cars charging become more common Over the last 30 years, the number of gas stations has gone down a lot, and this trend will likely continue. By 2035, around 25% of gas stations worldwide might have to close unless they make some changes. A company called BCG, which helps businesses, says this.

Gas stations that want to switch to charging stations for electric cars will need to get Level 3 chargers. These chargers are the strongest and can charge a car in 20 to 30 minutes. But getting these chargers can be expensive, costing between $500,000 and $1 million for many chargers.

Big companies that sell oil like BP and Shell are supporting gas stations that want to become charging stations. In the United States, there are also many incentives from the government, states, and utility companies. Businesses buy and install these fast chargers.

As more electric cars become popular, some gas stations are spending a lot of money to include charging stations for these cars.

Usually, they don’t remove the regular gas pumps. But a few places, like an RS Automotive in Takoma Park, Md., and a Shell station in Fulham. England, have completely switched to only having electric charging.

There are many things a gas station thinks about before making this change. They look at where the station is, how much it will cost, how much power needed, and how long it will take to make the switch. All these things help them decide if they should change all or part of their station to have charging for electric cars.

Neha Palmer, who is in charge of TeraWatt Infrastructure, a company setting up electric vehicle charging spots in California. Arizona, and New Mexico, mentioned that it’s not easy to set up charging stations while the gas station is still running. It’s a complicated task. She asked, “How do you organize the building work when there are cars that need to charge?”

Now, let’s talk about what people who own gas stations should understand. The growing trend of electric vehicle charging and how it will affect their future.

Idea of fast Electric cars charging

The idea of fast-charging electric vehicles (EVs) explained in an easy way:

When you have an electric car and you want to charge it , you use something called the “EV fast-charging” model.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Quick Power:** Fast-charging is like giving your car a lot of energy in a short time. It’s like filling up your car’s battery much faster than usual.
  2. Special Chargers:** You need special chargers for this. These chargers designed to provide a big burst of power to your car’s battery.
  3. Speedy Stop:** Instead of waiting for a long time to charge your car, fast-charging gets it done in a hurry. It’s not as slow as regular charging.
  4. Travel Convenience:** Fast-charging is great when you’re on a road trip and need to add power to keep driving.

So, EV fast-charging is about adding a lot of power to your electric car’s battery, and it’s handy for when you want to charge up and get back on the road without waiting too long.

Different places offer different types of charging for electric cars. For example, at places like offices, hospitals, and hotels, you usually find slower chargers because people stay there for a long time. But at gas stations, they’re putting in Level 3 chargers, which are stronger and can charge a car in 20 to 30 minutes.

The slower chargers are often free, but the fast chargers usually aren’t. This is because fast charging costs more due to things like the electricity used and extra fees from utilities in places like businesses. Seth Cutler, who works at a company called EV Connect that helps build charging stations, explained this.

So, some places have slower chargers that are free, while gas stations are getting powerful chargers that can charge cars , but you might have to pay for using them.

Oil companies that have franchise agreements and electric cars charging dealers are supporting the idea.

Large companies that sell oil and businesses that sell cars are supporting this idea. Let’s break it down:

Big Oil Companies and Car Dealers: These are large companies that sell oil for vehicles and businesses that sell cars to people.

On Board: They are in agreement and supportive of the concept.

In simpler terms, major oil companies and car dealers are in favor of the idea and are backing it up.

Big oil companies want to put electric vehicle (EV) chargers at their gas stations. This helps them in two ways – it protects their business and also gives them a new opportunity.

In the last 30 years, the number of gas stations has gone down a lot and this will continue. About 25% of these stations might need to close by 2035 if they don’t make changes to how they do things. This is what experts are saying.

The government under President Biden aims to have 500,000 EV chargers across the country by 2030. They also want more than half of the new cars sold to be electric by then. Right now, there are over three million electric cars and around 130,000 charging stations in the United States.

In simpler words, big oil companies are adding EV chargers to their gas stations. Because they want to stay strong in changing times. The number of gas stations is going down, and the government wants more electric cars and chargers to be available in the future.

The initial expenses can be astonishing, but incentives provide help electric cars charging

Deciding to add electric vehicle (EV) charging options at a gas station is a serious choice. It might take around 7 to 10 years to see a good return on the money spent, which is what Yair Nechmad from Nayax suggests.

Setting up EV charging involves both hardware (like chargers) and software (to manage the charging). One charger might cost about $50,000, and having many ones could be as expensive as $500,000. The other things like preparing the area, getting permits, and hiring workers can cost double that amount.

So, it’s smart to invest in all the necessary changes right at the beginning. Even if a gas station plans to start with a few chargers, it’s better to plan for more power that might needed in the future.

There are various benefits from the government, states, and utility companies to help businesses buy and set up fast chargers. For instance, the U.S. Department of Transportation has a program that gives money to states for putting up EV charging stations.

Gas station owners can look up information about these programs to see if they qualify for any incentives.

Where the gas station located is important, especially for franchises of electric cars

Getting into the electric vehicle (EV) charging business, even with incentives, can be tricky because of certain challenges. One big challenge is where the charging station located. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, most EV charging happens at people’s homes. This makes it less attractive for gas stations in towns to add charging stations, as they often lack things to do while waiting.

Having enough space can also be a problem. A regular gas station might have a few fuel pumps, but to serve as many EVs, it would need about 40 charging stations.

Gas stations near busy highways and popular destinations are better for charging hubs. These places usually have things like food, coffee, and rest areas for people while they wait.

Gas stations that also have convenience stores are starting to add EV chargers too. But these aren’t places to buy something and leave. They have more to offer.

Some gas station owners are cautious about this change. One owner, Blake Smith, has added EV charging to some locations in Florida, but not in places like Arkansas. He thinks it will take a long time before electric cars become the main thing on the road.

In simpler terms, adding EV chargers to gas stations can be tough, especially if the location isn’t right or if there’s not much to do while waiting. Gas stations near busy roads are better for this, and some convenience stores are also adding chargers. But, some gas station owners are taking their time because it might be a while before most cars are electric.
